Draft Magazine Article - Double Page Spread

I have created a draft double page spread including the article of what I intend to write about in my double page spread and how I want the layout to look. The pull quote and main image will be placed on separate pages so they don't overcrowd and clash against each other. The line in the middle of the page, marks the middle of the page and where the magazine would fold to ensure nothing will be wrote over the top of this fold.
To bring something different to the page I will also include photo's on the left hand side in a polaroid form of the previous photo in a sort of photo frame to show the previous image my girl band used to have therefore linking to the article.
This is a similar template for the photo frame that I intend to use.

Billboard Inspirations

I have chose some of my favourite billboard designs from a range of areas including the UK and USA. I have noticed that most billboards have little but large text in order for it stand out amongst passers by and make it easy to read. I have found that the image tends to take up half the page and the text takes up the other which is a design I like and will incorporate in my billboard as it's simple and doesn't  create an eyesore so passers by can quickly notice what the billboard entails and what it's trying to say without paying to much attention to it. As shown by the Beatles billboard and the Lana Del Rey album billboard, smaller text can be used for less important text which is also something I will incorporate in my billboard as I find it makes the billboard look more attractive but also keeps viewers looking in order to read the smaller font therefore analysing the billboard in more depth which will hopefully help audience's remember it.
Typically, billboards tend to be in colour however to challenge this concept I will make mine black and white as I feel this will stand out better amongst a built up area which would be filled with colour in itself. The images used in billboards tend to have high lighting and a specific background e.g the Beatles billboard in which there is an american flag in the background. The high lightening is used in oder to place emphasis on the faces of the artists which is something I will incorporate in my billboard to help ensure the focus of the billboard is prominent.

Correspondence

I have created a Facebook message including all of the models I plan to use for my photography for both my main task and ancillary tasks. As shown below, I asked my models if they were available on a chosen date so I can start taking images of them. I also informed the models on what I would be taking images of them for so they are prepared. I can now start planning for my photo shoot.
Note: A model profile for all the models below can be found HERE

Time Management 2 - Update

I have updated my current time management plan. I won't be able to complete the shot list on time as I have had to email Helen about a concern with the worksheet however I will complete it as soon as possible.Everything else is on schedule to be completed before the end of October.
I have also added an extra shot deconstruction as I realised I would benefit from doing a deconstruction of my ancillary tasks also, this should also be completed on time.

CHANGES - Contents Page

I have decided to add a editors letter onto the contents page as I have found this to be a common convention in regional magazines. I also asked my Facebook group if they would like this and I got a good response back resulting in why I have decided to make these changes.

Colour Lovers

After doing some research I found a website named Colour Lovers which enables you to make your own colour palette to find out what colours compliment or contrast each other. Here I created the colour palette I plan on using for my main task and both ancillary tasks.

Masthead Naming Rationale

As I am creating a regional magazine I decided the best name for my main task and both ancillary tasks would be to stick with a regional word in order to relate to the audience that would read it. I came up with a number of different choices such as:

  1. Lush
  2. Canny
  3. Mint
  4. Proper
  5. Class
All of the words I had considered all had positive connotations and would therefore present positive vibes to my audience. I finally decided on the choice Canny as I felt this fit well with the music genre and in the North East typically stands for 'good' so my magazine would be 'good music.' I also felt this was quite a catchy word and is something my target audience would say often and could therefore relate to it. I also felt this text would look good in block font which is what I want for my masthead as it fits my genre.

Masthead Development

After deciding what to call my magazine I decided to experiment with different masthead styles from the fonts I had chosen in the font research.

This was my first masthead attempt. I decided to follow a simplistic style but add something to it which is why I came up with the idea of extending the end of the y. After creating this I felt like it was a little plain which isn't something which attracts my primary target audience as they are known for their love of eccentric things. I also didn't like how the text was pointed in some places as I felt like this gave it a edgy look which was something I wasn't after as I felt it was more dance/electronic genre than alternative genre.
These are the reasons I decided not to use this.

This was my second masthead attempt. After realising I didn't like the pointy and thin font I decided to go for a more rounded and bold font to test this out instead. I also wanted to bring a more complex view to the ext rather than having it be simple so I pushed the letters together and added a line underneath the word. I really like this masthead and it was a close tie between this and the masthead I chose however the reason I decided against this was the fact that I think this looks quite childish which isn't something which would attract my target audience. I also think this may be hard to look at for some people as the name of my magazine may not be easily read from the way it's close together. After some thinking I decided against this masthead for those reasons.

FINAL DESIGN:
After designing the other two mastheads I decided with this masthead as I believe it's the most eccentric which will therefore attract my alternative target audience, it's not simple but not too complex which again will attract my target audience and finally it looks professional and is different to other regional magazines which would make it stand out amongst the other magazines.

Font Research

I have created a page filled with different font designs that I like and would consider using in my main task and both ancillary tasks. I have included the masthead fonts, sub-heading fonts and main body fonts to demonstrate the ideas I have for my magazine. I will most likely be using one of these fonts shown below for each category.
I found these different fonts on DaFont which is a website dedicated to sharing different fonts available for people to use.

These are the different fonts found on DaFont which I like and will use on my main and ancillary tasks.
