Masthead Development

After deciding what to call my magazine I decided to experiment with different masthead styles from the fonts I had chosen in the font research.

This was my first masthead attempt. I decided to follow a simplistic style but add something to it which is why I came up with the idea of extending the end of the y. After creating this I felt like it was a little plain which isn't something which attracts my primary target audience as they are known for their love of eccentric things. I also didn't like how the text was pointed in some places as I felt like this gave it a edgy look which was something I wasn't after as I felt it was more dance/electronic genre than alternative genre.
These are the reasons I decided not to use this.

This was my second masthead attempt. After realising I didn't like the pointy and thin font I decided to go for a more rounded and bold font to test this out instead. I also wanted to bring a more complex view to the ext rather than having it be simple so I pushed the letters together and added a line underneath the word. I really like this masthead and it was a close tie between this and the masthead I chose however the reason I decided against this was the fact that I think this looks quite childish which isn't something which would attract my target audience. I also think this may be hard to look at for some people as the name of my magazine may not be easily read from the way it's close together. After some thinking I decided against this masthead for those reasons.

FINAL DESIGN:
After designing the other two mastheads I decided with this masthead as I believe it's the most eccentric which will therefore attract my alternative target audience, it's not simple but not too complex which again will attract my target audience and finally it looks professional and is different to other regional magazines which would make it stand out amongst the other magazines.

  1. It would be good to see a post detailing why you have chosen this name for your magazine - I think it is a great name for a music magazine and I would like to see your rationale behind your ideas for using it.
